Program Information for New Students

Iowa State University’s Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP) helps students improve their abilities to read, write, speak, and understand English. While in our program, students live in Ames, Iowa, where they are surrounded by native English speakers and other students who are learning English. IEOP classes help students prepare for English assessment exams like TOEFL and IELTS, and our program also provides an introduction to American culture.

Our schedule at the IEOP is similar to the University’s academic schedule. We offer fall, spring, and summer programs. Fall and spring programs are 16 weeks long, and students will attend class for 20 hours each week. Our summer program is 8 weeks long.

At the beginning of each course session (fall, spring, and summer), the IEOP provides an orientation presentation that introduces students to academic life and US culture. IEOP students will also have the opportunity to talk with native English speakers through our Conversation Club.

Additional features of our program are

  • Small classes with experienced, dedicated instructors
  • Language Learning Center with computer lab
  • Orientation to the ISU campus and community
  • Conversation Club—includes events and opportunities to talk with native English speakers
  • Institutional (paper-based) TOEFL test at the end of each term

Students also have the option to enroll or participate in

  • Exit Option (We offer this program if there is enough interest and enrollment)*

*if student meets criteria and is selected; space is limited

Because of the challenges students would face in joining a class midway through the semester, we are not accepting beginner level students for Spring II or Fall II.

What do our students have to say about IEOP?

"The IEOP program is worth my investment. As a part-time student, I can only take 3 courses here. I met many kind people here. It was a wonderful experience. We became friends and had a nice semester. I am very grateful for this program, which helped me adapt to American culture and life."

"I really appreciate the Writing and Listening/Speaking course because both of these classes allow me to improve my English.  Now I am not afraid to speak English.  Thank you for all IEOP teachers."
