Programs

Iowa State University’s Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP) helps students improve their abilities to read, write, speak, and understand English. While in our program, students live in Ames, Iowa, where they are surrounded by native English speakers and other students who are learning English. IEOP classes help students prepare for English assessment exams like TOEFL and IELTS, and our program also provides an introduction to American culture.

Our schedule at the IEOP is similar to the University’s academic schedule. We offer fall, spring, and summer programs. Fall and spring programs are 16 weeks long, and students will attend class for 20 hours each week. Our summer program is 8 weeks long.

At the beginning of each course session (fall, spring, and summer), the IEOP provides an orientation presentation that introduces students to academic life and US culture. Throughout each semester, the IEOP includes a Cultural Awareness class that helps students further develop understanding of American culture. IEOP students will also have the opportunity to talk with native English speakers through our Conversation Club.

Additional features of our program are

  • Small classes with experienced, dedicated instructors
  • Language Learning Center with computer lab
  • Orientation to the ISU campus and community
